How Can I Find an LGBT-Friendly Adoption Agency?
More and more adoption agencies are working to implement the policies and practices necessary to welcome the LGBT community. Depending on where you live, finding an LGBT-friendly adoption agency may be a challenge. There are some signs you can look for to see if an agency is prepared to work with the LGBT community:
- Does the agency’s mission statement mention the LGBT community?
- Does the agency’s client non-discrimination statement include the terms “sexual orientation” or “gender identity”?
- Does the agency use LGBT inclusive advertising images?
- Does the agency have LGBT inclusive paperwork?
It is important to talk to other LGBT adoptive parents in your community about their experiences and for agency recommendations. You can do this by researching LGBT parenting groups in your area or contacting the local LGBT community center.
In addition to local resources, the HRC Family Project’s All Children – All Families program maintains a list of adoption agencies that are committed to welcoming the LGBT community.
