HRC Story


The Human Rights Campaign represents a force of more than 3 million members and supporters nationwide. As the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization, HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are ensured of their basic equal rights, and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.

Children, Youth, & Family Internship

The HRC Children, Youth and Families Program (CYFP) serves as a comprehensive resource for LGBT families and provides guidance to key institutions that work closely with LGBT children, youth and families. The program includes three groundbreaking initiatives. All Children-All Families works to increase LGBT cultural competence within child welfare agencies. Welcoming Schools helps elementary schools embrace family diversity, avoid gender stereotyping and end bias-based bullying. And the Youth Well-Being Project promotes safety, inclusion and well-being for LGBT youth, primarily through the annual Time to Thrive conference. CYFP is part of the HRC Foundation which manages much of the organization’s non-political work. We are currently seeking two interns to assist CYFP staff.



The HRC Children, Youth and Families Program, All Children – All Families Intern's responsibilities include:

  • Assist with routine communications to agencies participating in ACAF, as well as responding to inquiries from current and potential participants
  • Assist in maintaining database records including contact and policy information for ACAF
  • Support in developing, maintaining and distributing ACAF publications and outreach materials
  • Research/Issue tracking (i.e. adoption, foster care, LGBTQ parenting, etc.)
    • Relevant legislative activity, experiences of LGBTQ youth/adults in social service systems, best practices in child welfare, etc.
    • Policies and procedures of ACAF participating agencies
  • Provide logistical support for project meetings and training sessions
  • Track ACAF activities and accomplishments for:
    • Strategic program communications and engagement
    • Periodic reports to the staff and board of directors
  • Provide administrative support including research, drafting correspondence, scheduling meetings, sending publications, etc.
  • Attend regular ACAF, CYFP and HRC Foundation meetings
  • Work independently to complete various projects as assigned


  • Enrollment in or graduation from an accredited college or university
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) is required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and/or interest in LGBT issues is required; demonstrated knowledge of and/or interest in the issues that face LGBT families and/or LGBT youth in the areas of child welfare and education is a plus
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment is required
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills are required


  • Familiarization with the CYFP three main initiatives (All Children – All Families, Welcoming Schools and Youth Well-Being) and the main LGBT cultural competency issues on which these initiatives focus
  • Expanded understanding of the education programs and grassroots organizing of the HRC Foundation
  • Ability to coordinate a multi-faceted program in a non-profit organization
  • Administrative skills essential to any entry-level position
  • Fine-tuned writing skills


  • This is an unpaid internship. School credit is available upon request
  • This internship is based out of our office in Washington, D.C. Internships are also available in HRC’s Project One America offices in Little Rock, Ark., Jackson, Miss., and Birmingham, Ala. We cannot provide housing for our interns
