Position Summary

This position oversees the organization’s online communications, fundraising, advocacy and interactive programs. The Associate Director will be responsible for the overall messaging of online communication to HRC members and supporters.  This individual oversees the quality and consistency of messaging in interactive campaigns, working with key players across all departments within the organization, as well as outside vendors.

The Associate Director of Online Fundraising & Advocacy will help manage the day-to-day online operations. Key responsibilities of this position include oversight of HRC’s eCRM system and management of online and offline data.  The Associate Director will help serve as a technological expert for the eCRM system for the organization.  This staff member will implement national fundraising and advocacy campaigns; supervise audience selection and segmentation processes; oversee all HRC email communications and online projects including local alerts and email invitations, departmental newsletters, paid online advertising, and HRC’s mobile action network; and integrate all efforts with social networking sites.

Position Responsibilities

  • Direct the design, production and execution of advocacy and/or fundraising campaigns, list-building, viral marketing, social media campaigns, and community-building tools and strategy;
  • Develop & implement an integrated, web-based advocacy & e-fundraising strategy—including social media—ensuring accurate & consistent branding and messaging across all programs; 
  • Supervise the work of HRC’s online production team, including direct supervision of the Online Fundraising and Advocacy Manager;
  • Use rigorous data analysis to systemize and prioritize the organization’s online communications, with special emphasis on email response and conversion rates, and viral success;
  • Build & maintain a strong, engaged online list—including but not limited to e-appends, paid recruitment, viral campaigns, petition drives, online and offline grassroots advocacy, etc.;
  • Serve as executive editor and help with copy approval for all online communications;
  • Ensure the successful execution of all national email launches in conjunction with online vendors, including all related pages and collateral;
  • Authorize the scheduling of any last-minute emails to ensure proper timing for regional and national emails in conjunction with external consultants and vendors;
  • Oversee HRC’s segmentation strategy for the online list;
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of both HRC’s program work and development operations—actively participating in all relevant meetings.   
  • Work closely with his or her staff and all stakeholders throughout the organization to promote strategies, messages & priorities through interactive technologies;
  • Working closely with the Director of Direct Marketing, to develop, manage and monitor the online budget for both revenue and expenses;
  • Work with vendors to create a master organizational plan and schedule for online communications in the beginning of each fiscal year;
  • Along with the Online Director, manage all vendor-partner and consultant relationships and contractual obligations required to successfully execute a coordinated online communication program; 
  • Seek new opportunities and responsibilities as they arise not necessarily listed.

Position Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree. The professional must have 7 + years fundraising or equivalent online  experience, 2 – 5 years serving in a senior role with supervisory experience, as well as solid financial accountability and a proven track record of organizational marketing successes. 
  • Technical and analytical experience with online CRM systems. Convio preferred.
  • Experience with Facebook, Twitter and other social networks.
  • Superior interpersonal skills including the ability to work well with different personalities and balance sometimes competing internal constituencies. 
  • Experience managing graphic design and web development a plus. Excel and basic data manipulation skills also a plus.
