Position Summary:

The Human Rights Campaign seeks a Director of Foundation Relations to work as part of our growing major donor/foundation fundraising program.  This position reports to the Director of Major Gifts and Foundation Giving.  This position will lead a foundation grant development program that manages private foundation grant resources, which includes researching and identifying new funding prospects, collaborating closely with HRC Foundation staff, influence grant priorities, identify and secure grants, promote effective management of grant activities, prepare articles and reports, and contribute to interdepartmental development goals and objectives. The Director will have a bachelor's degree, nonprofit experience, substantial experience in the preparation of grant applications, including budgeting, professional training and grant program management, and excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.

Position Responsibilities:

Fundraising

  • Develop and execute strategies for significantly growing our revenue from institutional foundations. 
  • Develop and maintain growing portfolio of foundation funders; tasks include ongoing strategic planning and execution of plans for foundations, preparation of cultivation material, foundation proposals and reports.
  • Cultivate and nurture relationships with existing foundation funders and significantly increasing the breadth of the foundation prospect pool
  • Identify prospective foundations with whom the individual programs of the HRC Foundation are compatible with the funding priorities of foundation funders.
  • Identify, cultivate and solicit new, significant foundation sources.  The Director of Foundation Relations will work to increase the size and scope of the portfolio on an ongoing basis.
  • Increase visibility of HRC Foundation programs through incorporation of site visits by program officers to HRC and visits to Foundations from HRC President; Vice President of HRC Foundation; and other program staff as needed and appropriate. 

Planning and Program Management

  • Work closely with Vice President of HRC Foundation and program staff to help develop these programs and to effectively package and market these programs for foundation funders; develop effective strategies to build compelling cases for the programs of the HRC Foundation to prospective foundation funders. 
  • Ongoing assessment of proposal format and other communication vehicles; ensure that messages are fresh, current, and reflect the goals of the HRC Foundation programs.    
  • Develop and execute strategies for ongoing cultivation of influential players in the foundation grantmaking community
  • Work with HRC Board members and other key volunteers to identify and develop relationships with foundations.
  • Develop and maintain materials to engage board members in working with locally based and community foundations.
  • Represent the HRC Foundation and its programs in relationship with the overall development department
  • Assist in the development and execution of a long term growth plan for foundation funding for the HRC Foundation.
  • Oversee and ensure meeting of all grant compliance issues within allowed timeframes.
  • Manage workload and assignments for grantwriter/researcher; oversee ongoing proposal development; and assist with grant proposal writing as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college; preferably a master’s degree
  • Minimum of 5 years of fundraising experience with an emphasis on demonstrated success in a non-profit or foundation environment, with a strong focus on foundation solicitations
  • Experience meeting with senior level foundation staff to make presentations and solicitations
  • Excellent strategic thinking and planning skills
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Creativity and energy, confidence and integrity
  • Must be a well-organized self-starter who can work both in a team atmosphere and independently

All positions at the Human Rights Campaign and/or the Human Rights Campaign Foundation may require travel on a regular basis or periodically.  Where the need arises for business travel, appropriate compensation as outlined by the Fair Labor Standards Act will apply.
