Katie started her career in public service by using her talents to grow People Assisting the Homeless (PATH) from a local organization to California’s largest non-profit provider of homes for the homeless. Katie is devoted to advancing LGBTQ equality and passing the Equality Act — critically important federal legislation that would finally add clear, comprehensive non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people to our nation's civil rights laws. Discrimination is a real and persistent problem for far too many LGBTQ Americans. HRC polling has found that nearly two-thirds of self-identified LGBTQ Americans report experiencing discrimination.

Katie is running against the incumbent, Rep. Steve Knight — who scored an abysmal 16 percent on the HRC Congressional Scorecard for the 114th Congress. Notably, in May 2016, Knight shamefully voted to add an anti-LGBTQ provision to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that could have permitted sweeping anti-LGBTQ discrimination in all federal agencies, not just the Department of Defense. The provision, which ultimately did not become law, would have jeopardized President Obama’s executive order prohibiting LGBTQ discrimination in federal contracting.

In California, HRC has identified more than 1.4 million LGBTQ voters and more than 9 million likely “Equality Voters” — meaning they are strong supporters of progressive LGBTQ policies including marriage equality, equitable family law, and laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Last year, HRC announced a coast-to-coast campaign to mobilize these voters for the midterm elections called HRC Rising, which represents the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history.
