Washington - The Human Rights Campaign today welcomed San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro’s appointment of Adam Greenup to serve as the City’s chief LGBT Liaison.  

“The Mayor’s new appointment is good news for LGBT San Antonians,” said HRC Vice President Fred Sainz. “We’ve seen time and again that when leaders lead, it does wonders for LGBT equality. We’re looking forward to working with the Mayor and Adam on some local initiatives in San Antonio.”

Greenup, who currently serves as the Mayor’s senior policy advisor, was appointed to the post last week.  The action came three weeks after the release of HRC’s Municipal Equality Index, which gave San Antonio a score of 48 out of 100.  

Greenup joined the Mayor’s office in June 2011 after serving as Chief of Staff for District 1 City Councilwoman Mary Alice Cisneros. He is a first generation college graduate from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. Adam is also the recipient of the Fulbright Scholars Program, where he studied economic issues in China. 

Under Mayor Castro's leadership, the City of San Antonio recently extended health coverage to domestic partners of all city employees.

“San Antonio is a city that doesn’t just tolerate diversity, but celebrates it,” said Mayor Castro.  “Adam is the perfect person to continue our efforts of providing opportunity and equality to the city’s LGBT population.”

HRC’s newly released Municipal Equality Index (www.hrc.org/MEI) celebrates progress in cities around the country and fosters a competitive spirit in regions with work left to do.

The Human Rights Campaign is the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender political organization with members throughout the country. It effectively lobbies Congress, provides campaign support and educates the public to ensure that LGBT Americans can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.
