Healthcare Equality Index

Celebrating its 10th year, the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) is the national LGBTQ benchmarking tool that evaluates healthcare facilities' policies and practices related to the equity and inclusion of their LGBTQ patients, visitors and employees. The HEI 2017 evaluates a total of 1619 healthcare facilities nationwide.


Non-Discrimination and Staff Training

The Non-Discrimination and Staff Training criteria represents the foundational policies and practices that were previously considered the “Core Four” Leader criteria.  All questions in this section are scored and must be met in order to receive full credit: up to 40 points. Scored approaches include:

A. Patient Non-Discrimination
B. Visitation Non-Discrimination
C. Employment Non-Discrimination
D. Staff Training

Patient Non-Discrimination

  • LGBTQ-inclusive Patient Non-Discrimination Policy – Please see examples here
    • Policy must include the terms “sexual orientation” and “gender identity”
  • Patient non-discrimination is communicated to patients and staff – Please see examples here
    • Policy is shared in two ways with the public, typically online and in-print
    • Policy is shared with staff in at least one way

Visitation Non-Discrimination

  • LGBTQ-inclusive Equal Visitation Policy – Please see examples here
    • Policy must allow the patient’s visitor of their choice
  • Equal Visitation Policy is communicated to patients and staff – Please see examples here
    • Policy is shared in two ways with the public, typically online and in-print
    • Policy is shared with staff in at least one way
