Chris Sgro

Senior Director of Communications

Chris Sgro is HRC's Senior Director of Communications, where he helps lead the organization's strategic communications efforts. Chris came to HRC with more than a decade of political and nonprofit experience.

He joined the Human Rights Campaign in 2017 after serving four years as the Executive Director of Equality North Carolina. Chris also served as the only out gay member of the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2016 -- the year the infamous anti-LGBTQ HB2 was passed in North Carolina.

Chris credits former U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan as a mentor. He served as one of the first members of her successful 2008 campaign as a fundraiser. After her election, Chris worked in Hagan's official office for almost five years, serving on the senator's senior staff, first as Director of Grants & Special Projects and later as Director of Economic Development.

Prior to his work in North Carolina, Chris worked in Washington, D.C., for CARE, a national anti-poverty organization and America Votes during their successful 2006 campaign cycle.
