As transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive youth continue to face relentless attacks, HRC Foundation has created a number of resources for parents, families and caregivers who want to affirm their transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive youth and better understand the discrimination that their child’s community faces due to the lack of inclusive policies at the local, state and federal level.
Specifically, parents, family members and caregivers of Black transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive youth are searching for resources that speak to their family's experience with the intersections of gender and race. Families want sources that address: the range of gender identities among youth, navigating racial bias in gender-affirming medical care, where to find culturally responsive mental health and gender-affirming care, and discussions around religion and faith.
A Resource for Black Families, Family Members, and Caregivers of Black Transgender, Non-Binary, and LGB Youth
We've created a resource that speak to Black families and family members of varied backgrounds, centering on experiences with gender and race. We look at the racial biases and discrimination families experience while supporting their Black trans and gender non-conforming children, and highlight Black LGBTQ+ historical and current figures contributing to place-making in society.

This guide is for parents and caregivers of Black transgender youth. It’s here to help you support your child as they start to date and explore close relationships. Everything in this guide comes from real experiences — conversations with Black transgender youth, their families, and Black mental health experts.
