INDIANAPOLIS - After the co-owner of an Indianapolis bakery refused to make rainbow-themed cupcakes for a college diversity group's National Coming Out Day celebration, the Indianapolis community - both gay and straight - rallied against discrimination and intolerance. This morning, Radio Now's The Scotty Show held a Gay Cupcake Party. The Human Rights campaign participated in the party and purchased an ad in the Indy Star thanking Mayor Greg Ballard and the fair-minded citizens of Indianapolis for standing against discrimination. "The days of blatant acts of discrimination in the community going unchallenged are long gone," said HRC President Joe Solmonese. "The people of Indianapolis today showed they are fair-minded and stand behind their LGBT community."

According to The Advocate, the co-owner of the business cited family values as the reason for refusing the college students. The business owner told a local reporter: "I explained we're a family-run business, we have two young, impressionable daughters and we thought maybe it was best not do that." The co-owner went on to say "We have our values, and you know, some things テ for instance, if someone wants a cookie with an obscenity, well, we're not going to sell that."

A spokesman says Mayor Greg Ballard was "dismayed" by the bakery's refusal to serve the students, calling it "unacceptable." Ballard has ordered an investigation - the cookie retailer is located in the publicly owned City Market.

The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against GLBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
