Human Rights Campaign Endorses Ron Nirenberg for San Antonio Mayor

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, announced its endorsement of Ron Nirenberg for mayor of San Antonio, Texas. Voters will decide the outcome of the city’s runoff mayoral election this Saturday, June 10.

“Ron Nirenberg has the vision, experience, and commitment to equality that will continue to move San Antonio forward as a welcoming and inclusive city,” said JoDee Winterhof, HRC Senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs. “HRC is proud to stand with Nirenberg because he firmly believes that every San Antonian should be treated fairly, regardless of who they are or whom they love.”

“I’m honored to have the support of the Human Rights Campaign in the race for mayor,” said Ron Nirenberg. “HRC agrees the ‘City You Deserve’ embraces equality and inclusion, celebrates diversity and treats all people, including our friends and neighbors in the LGBTQ community, with dignity and respect.”

As one of the largest cities in the country and second largest city in Texas, San Antonio has been an important focus for HRC for many years. In September 2013, the San Antonio City Council passed a non-discrimination ordinance with protections for LGBTQ people in contracting, housing, public accommodations, and city employment.

First elected to the City Council in 2013 and re-elected in 2015, Ron Nirenberg voted in favor of the city’s non-discrimination ordinance during his first year in office. Nirenberg has also played a key role in guiding the development of the SA Tomorrow Plan — a citizen-driven blueprint for the city’s future.

Nirenberg’s support for LGBTQ equality stands in stark contrast to the other candidate in the runoff race, current Mayor Ivy Taylor — who voted against the city’s non-discrimination ordinance as a City Council member and has failed to demonstrate a committment to LGBTQ equality over the past four years.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
