Human Rights Campaign Endorses Aaron Ford for Nevada Attorney General

LAS VEGAS -- Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, announced its endorsement of State Senator Aaron Ford (D-Las Vegas) for Nevada Attorney General.

“Aaron Ford’s lifelong commitment to equality and public service makes him the ideal candidate for Nevada Attorney General,” said HRC Nevada State Manager Briana Escamilla. “As AG, he will stand up for the rights of all Nevadans, ensuring that the Silver State remains an inclusive and welcoming state for all. The Human Rights Campaign is proud to endorse Aaron Ford, and we look forward to working with him to advance equality in the Silver State.”

Said Aaron Ford, “I’m honored and humbled to receive the endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign. As Nevada Attorney General, you have my commitment that I'll fight to uphold and defend the rights of all Nevadans. I'm proud to have fought alongside HRC and Nevada's LGBTQ community to ensure everyone is treated equally under the law -- from banning dangerous conversion therapy for minors, to protecting the privacy of transgender Nevadans, to passing landmark anti-discrimination measures. If I am fortunate enough to serve as the next attorney general of the Silver State, Nevada's LGBTQ community will be able to count on me to defend them against any attempts to discriminate based on who they love.”

A former law clerk and math teacher, and current Majority Leader of the Nevada State Senate, Ford has a long record of public service and fighting for the rights of all Nevadans. Ford has consistently led efforts to defeat anti-equality legislation and pass pro-LGBTQ bills, such as a statewide ban on so-called “conversion therapy” for minors. In the general election, he will be facing former First Assistant Attorney General Wes Duncan. As former State Assemblyman for the 37th District, Duncan opposed marriage equality and legislation that sought to add gender identity to the state hate crimes prevention law.

HRC recently announced a bold, proactive grassroots expansion with the launch of HRC Rising -- a campaign to accelerate progress in states from coast-to-coast, resist the politics of hate, fight anti-LGBTQ legislation, and fuel pro-equality candidates and initiatives. The expansion is the biggest strategic investment in the organization’s 38-year history and will include significant investments in Nevada. HRC has identified more than 455,000 Nevadans as likely Equality Voters, meaning they are strong supporters of progressive LGBTQ policies including marriage equality, adoption by LGBTQ people, and laws that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
