HRC Statement on Christine Hallquist’s Historic Candidacy

Washington -- Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, released the following statement on HRC-endorsed Christine Hallquist’s historic candidacy as the first out transgender major party candidate for governor in the nation.

“Despite tonight’s outcome, Christine Hallquist has led a trailblazing, historic campaign as the first openly transgender major party candidate for governor. She ran on a platform of furthering civil rights, expanding health care and holding government accountable -- committing to making Vermont an even stronger, more vibrant and inclusive state,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “Hallquist’s inspiring and pioneering campaign has sent a loud, clear message that transgender people deserve a seat at the table in every level of government, and HRC was proud to stand by her side and mobilize more than 140,000 Equality Voters in Vermont to turn out in his historic election.”

HRC had an organizer on the ground for a major get-out-the-vote effort across the state through a robust door-to-door, mail and phone canvassing in partnership with local groups. Over the last four days in Vermont, HRC members and supporters knocked on hundreds of doors.

HRC’s Equality Votes PAC invested in an ad blitz focused on turning out the vote in key states and congressional districts nationwide--including Vermont’s gubernatorial race in support of Christine Hallquist. The digital advertising focused on mobilizing voters to turn out and make history on November 6th by electing Hallquist.

A former utility executive and businessperson, Hallquist is a strong advocate for LGBTQ equality  committed to strengthening local communities and finding solutions to the very real challenges affecting  the day-to-day lives of all Vermonters.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work, and in every community.
