HRC Endorses Pro-Equality Jennifer Boysko for Virginia’s 33rd Senate District Special Election

WASHINGTON — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) — the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization — announced its endorsement of Jennifer Boysko (D) in Virginia’s 33rd Senate District Special Election set for January 8, 2019. The special election is being held to fill the seat vacated by Congresswoman-elect Jennifer Wexton (VA-10). Boysko is the current Delegate for the 86th district of the Virginia General Assembly.

“Jennifer Boysko is a champion of equality who will continue to fight for statewide non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people,” said HRC National Field Director Marty Rouse. “Boysko will work to move Virginia forward as a stronger, more vibrant and inclusive place, and she is the clear choice for voters who want a passionate advocate for all of Virginia’s hard-working families. HRC is proud to endorse Boysko, and we look forward to working closely with her to advance LGBTQ equality throughout the commonwealth.”

“I am happy to be endorsed by the Human Rights Campaign,” said Jennifer Boysko. “I have always been a strong supporter of LGBTQ rights, from officiating the wedding of my childhood friend and his husband to championing legislation to protect LGBTQ people from discrimination. I will continue to work to make Virginia a welcoming place for everyone.”

Jennifer Boysko has been a strong and consistent voice for LGBTQ equality in the Virginia House of Delegates. Boysko also worked to improve the schools and economy in Northern Virginia and fought to expand Medicaid to thousands of Virginians.

In November, HRC-endorsed Congresswoman-elect Jennifer Wexton (VA-10) defeated anti-LGBTQ Congresswoman Barbara Comstock. HRC deployed 14 staff and organizers for a major get-out-the-vote effort across the commonwealth alongside its local volunteer steering committees. Leading up to the election, HRC members and supporters knocked on thousands of doors. In addition to robust door-to-door, mail and phone canvassing in partnership with local groups, HRC hosted four Equality Action Academy trainings to give HRC members and supporters the tools they need to take action locally in legislative advocacy and in support of pro-equality candidate campaigns.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work, and in every community.
