HRC releases 2019 CEI with perfect scores from 570 companies; Outrageous -- Brunei may implement death penalty for LGBTQ people.

HRC RELEASES ANNUAL CORPORATE EQUALITY INDEX (CEI) WITH 570 U.S. COMPANIES EARNING PERFECT SCORES: “The top-scoring companies on this year’s CEI are not only establishing policies that affirm and include employees here in the United States, they are applying these policies to their global operations and impacting millions of people beyond our shores,” said HRC President Chad Griffin (@ChadHGriffin). “Many of these companies have also become vocal advocates for equality in the public square, including the dozens that have signed on to amicus briefs in vital Supreme Court cases and the more than 170 that have joined HRC’s Business Coalition for the Equality Act. Time and again, leading American businesses have shown that protecting their employees and customers from discrimination isn’t just the right thing to do -- it’s also good for business.” Read more from HRC.

  • The number of U.S. employees with a corporate non-discrimination policy protecting them from sexual orientation or gender identity discrimination is 16.8 million.
  • Gender identity is now part of non-discrimination policies at 85 percent of Fortune 500 companies, up from just three percent in 2002.
  • More than 500 major employers have adopted supportive inclusion guidelines for transgender workers who are transitioning.

HOUSE EXPECTED TO VOTE LATER TODAY ON RESOLUTION OPPOSING TRUMP-PENCE TRANSGENDER TROOP BAN: The bipartisan resolution was sponsored by U.S. Representative Joseph Kennedy, III (D-MA), chair of the Congressional Transgender Equality Task Force. The vote comes just weeks after five brave transgender service members -- Navy Lt. Cmdr. Blake Dremann, Army Capt. Jennifer Peace, Army SSgt. PUERTO RICO’S GOVERNOR ISSUES HISTORIC EXECUTIVE ORDER PROTECTING YOUTH FROM “CONVERSION THERAPY”: “We commend Governor Ricardo Rossello for his leadership in issuing this order to protect LGBTQ minors in Puerto Rico,” said HRC Senior Legislative Counsel Xavier Persad. “Puerto Rico now joins 15 other states and the District of Columbia in protecting LGBTQ minors from this despicable practice and sending a message that these youth should be affirmed and embraced.” More from HRC and the Advocate.

BUSINESSES IN LATIN AMERICA CONTINUE TO EXPAND LGBTQ INCLUSION: HRC has also established its presence in the region, including through Equidad MX Report and the Equidad CL Report, both modeled after the HRC Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index. “[Equidad MX has] been very effective because companies have used it to work toward inclusion so that diversity feels comfortable and workers feel appreciated for who they are,” said Francisco Robledo, founder of Mexico’s Alliance for Workplace Inclusion and Diversity (ADIL) and HRC’s implementing partner.   • In Texas, businesses -- including Apple, Amazon, Dell and PepsiCo, tourism groups and Chambers of Commerce have sent a letter to the Texas State Legislature opposing bills that target the LGBTQ community for discrimination. Read more from the Dallas Morning News.
