SCOTUS denies a Philly adoption agency a license to discriminate; Trans asylum-seekers held in separate ICE detention centers

SCOTUS REFUSES TO TAKE UP CASE, EFFECTIVELY DENYING A PHILLY ADOPTION AGENCY A LICENSE TO DISCRIMINATE: Said HRC Legal Director Sarah Warbelow: “No child should ever be denied a safe and happy home because of who their qualified prospective parents or guardians are. In a nation of over 400,000 foster children, it is inexcusable that some would choose to play politics rather than prioritize the security and well-being of children in need of a loving family. In declining to intervene, the Supreme Court allowed the City of Philadelphia to act in the best interest of children in need.” More from The New York Times.

TRANS ASYLUM-SEEKERS ARE BEING SEGREGATED IN SEPARATE ICE DETENTION CENTER IN NEW MEXICO: The center also serves as a county jail and state prison, and reports indicate that these asylum-seekers are not receiving adequate health care. Recently, Roxsana Hernandez, a transgender woman who arrived in San Diego with a caravan of migrants from Central American, tragically died in ICE custody. HRC has called for an investigation into her death. More from Marisa Demarco (@radiomarisa) at NPR.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY -- DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE WAS ONCE A PLAN FOR A “LGBTQ TOWN” IN NEVADA CALLED STONEWALL? While it did not go as planned (no spoilers!) their story demonstrates the ways LGBTQ history is often lost or removed from the history books. More from Atlas Obscura.

HRC ENDORSES KATIE PORTER AND GIL CISNEROS FOR U.S. CONGRESS FOR CALIFORNIA’S 45TH AND 39TH DISTRICTS: “Katie Porter and Gil Cisneros are proven leaders who will fight each and every day in Congress for the hard working families in their districts,” said JoDee Winterhof, HRC Senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs. “As the Trump-Pence administration unleashes an onslaught of attacks on LGBTQ people, women, and marginalized communities, it’s crucial that Southern California’s fair-minded voters turn out this November to send Porter, Cisneros, and a pro-equality majority to Congress and pull the emergency brake on this administration’s reckless, discriminatory agenda.” More rom HRC.
