We need real leadership in the White House; HRC mourns Kee Sam, Black trans woman killed in Louisiana

⏰ 34 DAYS ⏰

Last night’s debate proved that we need real leadership in the White House. From Trump’s failure to address the COVID-19 pandemic -- which has hit LGBTQ people harder than most -- and his attacks on LGBTQ workplace protections in spite of Bostock’s progress, it’s clearer than ever that we must vote for equality this election. • Said HRC President Alphonso David (@alphonsodavid), “Donald Trump tried to bully his way through this debate, illustrating just how desperate and deranged Trump is. Our democracy is at stake and Trump’s sideshow was a clown show and a mockery of our nation. Joe Biden put Trump on the ropes and showed why he is the only option for Americans who care about restoring the soul of our nation and putting our country back on track. We all must vote this election and vote for the only ticket that can save our democracy, support our economy and protect our communities -- Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.”
  • Joe Biden’s decades-long record supporting LGBTQ people is both strong and multifaceted. Meanwhile, since the moment Donald Trump and Mike Pence walked into the White House, they have attacked the progress we have made toward full equality for the LGBTQ community. HRC MOURNS KEE SAM, BLACK TRANS WOMAN KILLED IN LOUISIANA IN AUGUST: Her death is believed to be at least the 27th violent death of a transgender or gender non-conforming person this year in the U.S. “We know that Black trans women are disproportionately affected by this violence, and yet far too many still remain silent about the violence we face,” said HRC Director of Community Engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative Tori Cooper (@MsToriCooper1). “We must all support and protect our trans friends and family. We must also ensure that hate crime laws and judicial systems hold those who hurt us accountable.” More from HRC.

  • As previously shared, HRC is also mourning the loss of Aerrion Burnett, a Black transgender woman who was killed in Missouri earlier this month. Her death is believed to be at least the 28th violent death of a trans or gender non-conforming person this year.
  • 2020 has already seen at least 28 transgender or gender non-conforming people fatally shot or killed by other violent means, the majority of whom were Black and Latinx transgender women. More from HRC.
