#AM_Equality: HRC calls on NCAA to not host future ‘Final Four’ in states with anti-trans discrimination; HRC endorses Andrea Jenkins and Philippe Cunningham for re-election

🏀 HRC CALLS ON NCAA NOT TO HOST FUTURE ‘FINAL FOUR’ IN STATES WITH ANTI-TRANS DISCRIMINATION: “The time for the NCAA’s leadership on this issue is now. As the organization begins to contemplate a future of inclusion, HRC hopes the NCAA will be a partner in our fight to end legal discrimination against transgender youth.” More from HRC.

🌈 HRC CELEBRATES LGBTQ+ HISTORY MONTH: Started in 1994 by gay high school teacher Rodney Wilson of Missouri and some of his community members, LGBTQ+ History Month was founded with the hopes of giving LGBTQ+ kids a chance Wilson never had: to learn their history and see themselves in those who came before them. October was chosen because that was where National Coming Out Day already fell. More from HRC.

🏠 COVENANT HOUSE OPENING NEW LOW-BARRIER SHELTER FOR LGBTQ+ YOUTH: Covenant House, a nonprofit group with locations across the country, opened a new, low-barrier shelter for LGBTQ+ young people on Friday afternoon in the Deanwood neighborhood of Northeast Washington DC. QUEER RIGHTS ARE REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS & REPRO RIGHTS ARE QUEER RIGHTS: Kierra Johnson (@kierradc), the Executive Director of the National LGBTQ Task Force, writes, “The same opponents of abortion rights are denying LGBTQ couples the right to provide loving homes as foster parents. The same opponents of contraceptive access are criminalizing the identities of trans children. The same opponents of comprehensive sex education are ready to deny health care to LGBTQ people in the name of religious freedom.” More from LGBTQ Nation.


⚧️ TEXAS HAS CONSIDERED DOZENS OF ANTI-TRANS BILLS. THESE MOMS HAVE HELPED STOP THEM: Since January, Texas has considered 52 bills that target trans people, particularly youth. Parents like Rachael Gonzales, a mother of a trans child, have helped defeat all of the bills so far, but they worry about the future. More from NBC.
