#AM_Equality: Transgender Awareness Week 2021 begins as LGBTQ+ community is under siege; HRC & Athlete Ally call on NCAA to protect trans athletes

TRANSGENDER AWARENESS WEEK 2021 BEGINS AS COMMUNITY IS UNDER SIEGE: “Dehumanizing rhetoric has real-life consequences for the transgender community, particularly transgender women of color but especially Black transgender women. As we have seen an unprecedented number of bills introduced in state legislatures attacking transgender youth and trans adults, the moment we are in is clear,” said HRC Interim President Joni Madison (@HRC_President, she/her). “They have attacked transgender people’s right to health care, right to exist in public, and right to live openly, with the ultimate goal of dehumanizing and erasing their lives and experiences.” More from Washington Blade.

🩺 ONLY 6% OF LGBTQ+ PEOPLE SAY THEY AREN’T GETTING A COVID VACCINE: According to data in HRC’s new research examining COVID-19 and LGBTQ+ health equity, only 6% of LGBTQ+ people are not planning to get a vaccine to prevent COVID-19. HRC also reported that 60 percent said they had “a great deal of confidence” in the COVID-19 vaccines. More from Advocate.

THE UNITED STATES MUST ADVANCE ECONOMIC SECURITY FOR DISABLED LGBTQI+ WORKERS: Data indicates that disabled LGBTQ+ workers experience difficulties obtaining and maintaining employment at higher rates. More from The Center for American Progress.

HRC & ATHLETE ALLY CALL ON NCAA TO INCLUDE NON-DISCRIMINATION LANGUAGE & ENFORCEABLE PROTECTIONS FOR TRANSGENDER ATHLETES IN NEW CONSTITUTION: Today, the NCAA is meeting to present its new constitution, which stripped the governing document of previously existing non-discrimination policy language. “This year, during an historically bad legislative session for anti-LGBTQ+, and specifically anti-trans, bills, we asked for the NCAA’s help in once again standing up to discriminatory bills that targeted vulnerable transgender kids,” said HRC Interim President Joni Madison. “Students need the NCAA’s leadership and the organization still has an opportunity to provide it by amending their constitution to include our recommended protections. Otherwise the NCAA athletes of tomorrow will be prevented from playing high school sports today.” More from HRC and NBC Sports.
