YESTERDAY HRC HOSTED RALLY IN TEXAS: Yesterday, HRC President Alphonso David (@AlphonsoDavid) was joined by Transgender Education Network of Texas (@TransTexas), Texas Freedom Network (@TFN), Equality Texas (@EqualityTexas), Lambda Legal (@LambdaLegal), ACLU Texas (@ACLUTx) and HRC supporters for a rally to support transgender children in Texas and beyond. 🩺 DOCTORS FEAR NEXT STEPS IF STATES BAN CARE FOR TRANS YOUTH: Tens of thousands of trans youth are at risk of losing health care from the proposed bills, the Williams Institute estimates. This comes as 20 states this year have introduced bills to criminalize gender-affirming healthcare for transgender kids, in some cases making it a felony offense for doctors and parents to provide puberty blockers or surgery. HRC MOURNS IRIS SANTOS, LATINX TRANS WOMAN KILLED IN HOUSTON: HRC is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Iris Santos, a 22-year-old Latinx transgender woman killed in Houston, Texas, on April 23, 2021. “It is incredibly tragic and disheartening to continue to witness senseless and vicious attacks against our community,” said HRC Director of Community Engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative Tori Cooper. “Iris was so young with so many things to look forward to. Iris was simply minding her own business, sitting and eating when her life was abruptly cut short. Our transgender community needs federal protection and we need it now. We can’t and mustn’t continue to suffer.” More from HRC.

HRC MOURNS TIFFANY THOMAS, BLACK TRANSGENDER WOMAN KILLED IN DALLAS: HRC is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Tiffany Thomas, a 38-year-old Black transgender woman, who was shot to death on April 24 in Dallas, Texas. “Over the last few days and weeks, we have received reports of numerous deaths of transgender and gender non-conforming people,” said HRC Director of Community Engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative Tori Cooper. “Tiffany did not deserve to die -- none of the transgender and gender non-conforming people who have been killed this year deserved to lose their lives. We need everyone to speak up and speak out in support of transgender people. The violence must end.” More from HRC.


TENNESSEE GOV. BILL LEE SIGNS ANTI-LGBTQ EDUCATION BILL INTO LAW: “LGBTQ people are integral to the fabric of American society. Governor Lee and the Tennessee state legislature’s disgraceful attempts to erase LGBTQ individuals from coursework is discrimination in its clearest form,” said HRC Associate Regional Campaign Director Melodía Gutiérrez (@mell0wdia). “By signing SB 1229 into law, Governor Lee and Tennessee lawmakers are actively putting LGBTQ youth at risk, who already experience heightened levels of anxiety and depression. They must stop this rampage of discriminatory legislation.” More from HRC.
