#AM_Equality: HRC condemns Oklahoma State Senate for passing anti-equality legislation in violation of federal civil rights law

REMEMBERING NEDRA SEQUENCE MORRIS, A “STRONG, OPINIONATED” BLACK TRANS WOMAN: “Nedra ‘Sequence’ Morris was a well-loved and respected member of her community. She touched so many people’s lives with her kindness and fiery personality. Her horrific death is yet another example of the epidemic of violence targeting Black transgender and non-binary people. We all hope for justice to be served and for Sequence’s friends and family to find peace and closure,” said HRC Director of Community Engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative Tori Cooper (@MsToriCooper1, she/her). LGBTQ+ STUDENTS MORE LIKELY TO LEAVE HOME FOR COLLEGE IN MORE WELCOMING STATES: A study conducted by the Williams Institute found 21.5% of LGBTQ+ students attending undergraduate or graduate programs reported choosing a university in a different city or state to find a friendlier LGBTQ+ environment. 32.6% of LGBTQ+ students said they chose a university away from their hometowns in order to get away from their family, compared to 14.1% of non-LGBTQ+ students. FRIDAY FEATURE: Tuck Woodstock (@tuckwoodstock, he/they) is a journalist, educator and audio producer. He is the host of the award-winning podcast Gender Reveal and a co-founder of both the Trans Journalists Association and Sylveon Consulting (a firm focused on trans equity in media). Tuck has been featured as a gender educator by the New York Times, NPR, and the Washington Post, as well as at universities such as NYU, Northwestern, Reed College, and the New School.

  • Read their recommendation: “John Paul Brammer is one of my absolute favorite writers, and his newsletter never fails to nourish me. In the sea of abjectly terrible news re: trans rights, climate change, COVID, etc., it was a treat and a joy to read his most recent advice column, “What’s Up With Daddies?
  • Learn more about what inspires them: “Two of my all-time favorite Gender Reveal guests are Kai Cheng Thom and Da’Shaun Harrison. They both bring such passion and fearlessness to their writing, and I admire the way their work equips our communities with the tools we need if we're ever going to reach liberation.”

📍 IN THE STATES

HRC CONDEMNS OKLAHOMA STATE SENATE FOR PASSING ANTI-EQUALITY LEGISLATION IN VIOLATION OF FEDERAL CIVIL RIGHTS LAW: “Legislators in Oklahoma have been relentless in their attacks against the LGBTQ+ community - they’ve already passed legislation that prohibits transgender students from being able to play sports at school, and they’ve made it impossible for non-binary people to correct their identity documents,” said HRC State Legislative Director and Senior Counsel Cathryn Oakley (@CthrynOkly, she/her). “These legislators can try, but they will never erase LGBTQ+ people - and we won’t stop fighting back.” More from HRC.
