HRC urges Congress to address police reform and accountability; Justice Smith comes out with powerful Black Lives Matter post.

HRC URGES CONGRESS TO ADDRESS POLICE REFORM AND ACCOUNTABILITY: “It’s time that Congress takes action and passes meaningful police reform and accountability legislation to rectify a legacy of white supremacy and anti-Black racism that continues to lead to police violence and killing of Black people across the country,” said HRC President Alphonso David (@AlphonsoDavid). “The Justice in Policing Act contains critical federal reforms that are an important step. Thank you to Speaker Pelosi, Leader Schumer, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Bass, Chairman Nadler and Senators Booker and Harris, for their leadership to quickly address this pressing issue.”

  • HRC joined 400+ organizations pushing congressional leadership to immediately take up federal reforms to address policing. The federal reforms -- which are outlined in a letter with the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights -- can also be found here.

  • Tony McDade, a Black transgender man, was killed in Tallahassee, Florida, on May 27. His death is believed to be the at least 12th violent death of a transgender or gender non-conforming person this year in the U.S. McDade was allegedly killed by police -- which could make it the third officer-involved shooting in just under two months involving the Tallahassee Police Department. HOW TO SUPPORT BLACK LGBTQ YOUTH WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH: Studies, including from HRC, show that Black LGBTQ youth disproportionately struggle with their mental health due to a toxic combination of racism, homophobia, transphobia and biphobia.
