#AM_Equality: Honoring Shawmaynè Giselle Marie, loving friend to many; Remembering Brazil Johnson, an LGBTQ+ activist who fought against hate
HONORING SHAWMAYNÈ GISELLE MARIE, TRUE AND LOVING FRIEND TO MANY, OF GULFPORT, MS: “Shawmaynè was a kind, beautiful young person who, like any person, deserved to live a full life. Her life was cut short by gun violence. These tragedies happen all too often to Black and brown transgender women in communities across the country,” said HRC Director of Community Engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative Tori Cooper (@MsToriCooper1, she/her). “The violence we face is one of the devastating results of ongoing stigma and discrimination. All of us must step up to end that stigma.” More from HRC.
REMEMBERING BRAZIL JOHNSON, AN LGBTQ+ ACTIVIST WHO FOUGHT AGAINST HATE: “We need to remember Brazil as a human, as a community member, and as a beacon of living in one’s truth. We need to inspect our own biases about transgender people, specifically Black trans women, and how our biases and prejudices may add to the transphobia that fuels hateful violence. Are we doing enough to make sure the trans women of color in our lives are safe, affirmed, and valued?” said HRC Director of Community Engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative Tori Cooper. HRC FOUNDATION LAUNCHES IN-HOME HIV TESTING CAMPAIGN: “By providing greater access to in-home testing, we’re combating the stigma that so many transgender women of color and Black and Latinx gay and bisexual men face when visiting a health care provider,” said HRC Interim President Joni Madison (@HRC_President, she/her).
