AM_Equality: Transgender student wins legal battle after SCOTUS rejects school board appeal; HRC & SAGE release Long-Term Care Equality Index

HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN PRESIDENT ON SUPREME COURT ALLOWING GAVIN GRIMM’S VICTORY TO STAND: “The decision to deny certiorari affirms that transgender students are protected by Title IX,” said HRC President Alphonso David (@AlphonsoDavid, he/him). “Everyone has the right to high-quality, public education without the fear of being discriminated against simply for being brave enough to show up as you truly are. This is a battle Gavin Grimm has been fighting for over four years -- we are grateful that his resilience, courage and determination has finally been rewarded. ” More from HRC, Advocate and ABC News.

🩺 HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN AND SAGE RELEASE FIRST EDITION OF THE LONG-TERM CARE EQUALITY INDEX: “Long-term care is an essential part of assisting and providing for LGBTQ people as they age. The Human Rights Campaign Foundation is proud to partner with SAGE on the Long-Term Care Equality Index (LEI), a new benchmarking toolset to fundamentally change the inclusivity of long-term care,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “As this report makes clear, finding inclusive long-term care communities can be especially challenging for LGBTQ older adults, and that more long-term care communities need to take the lead on LGBTQ inclusion. Together, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation and SAGE will continue working to ensure that LGBTQ people at all stages of life have safe and equitable access to inclusive long-term care.” More from HRC.

EDUCATION SEC. CARDONA: “WE STAND WITH LGBTQ STUDENTS”: “Full inclusion at school is a vital part of supporting the academic, mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing of LGBTQ young people, just as it is for all students,” said U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona (@SecCardona). “Discriminating against LGBTQ people or banning students from engaging in school activities on the basis of sex undermines their education and defies our nation’s values of inclusivity, equality, and freedom. With the Department of Education’s recent announcement, the federal government has reaffirmed that discrimination on the basis of sex -- including sexual orientation and gender identity -- isn’t just wrong, it’s prohibited in America’s schools.” More from Advocate.

OHIO LEGISLATURE SENDS ANTI-LGBTQ MEDICAL REFUSAL LANGUAGE TO GOVERNOR DEWINE’S DESK IN STATE BUDGET: “The legislature’s hasty attempt to sneak this language into law shows that they know discriminatory legislation like this would never pass muster with the people of Ohio. This bill would effectively give medical practitioners of all kinds the license to discriminate against patients, including LGBTQ people, denying them medically necessary, often life-saving care,” said HRC President Alphonso David.
