#AM_Equality: HRC partners with Washington DC artist to explore the joy and pain of Juneteenth; HRC slams discriminatory FINA policy banning transgender swimmers

HRC PARTNERS WITH WASHINGTON, D.C. ARTIST TO EXPLORE THE JOY AND PAIN OF JUNETEENTH: “Juneteenth is a time for our country to reflect on our collective history, to consider how the legacy of slavery lives with us to this day and to fully acknowledge that Black Americans bear the brunt of institutional and systemic discrimination because of the role of white supremacy in our nation’s past, and present,” said HRC Interim President Joni Madison. “By celebrating this holiday, which also takes place during Pride Month, we aim to lift up the lived experiences of Black, queer Americans—and treat it with the weight, significance and power that it deserves. This Juneteenth, and at all times, I am proud to help share the platforms of the Human Rights Campaign to lift up powerful messages like the one in artist Nia Keturah Calhoun’s piece.” More from HRC.

DESANTIS ADMINISTRATION MOVES TOWARD DENYING HEALTH CARE TO TRANSGENDER FLORIDIANS; HRC CALLS ON STATE HEALTH OFFICIALS TO REVERSE COURSE ON DISCRIMINATORY PROPOSED RULE: “With this rule change proposal, the DeSantis Administration is signaling once again that it thinks it knows better than the residents and medical providers of Florida,” said HRC Legal Director Sarah Warbelow (@sarahwarbelow, she/her). “This rule will harm thousands of Floridians if it goes into effect, and it should be rejected summarily.” More from HRC.

HRC SLAMS DISCRIMINATORY FINA POLICY BANNING TRANSGENDER SWIMMERS: “This sudden and discriminatory decision is a blatant attack on transgender athletes who have worked to comply with longstanding policies that have allowed them to participate for years without issue,” said HRC Interim President Joni Madison (@HRC_President, she/her). “To the young athletes who may be disheartened by this policy, know that we know and believe that every young person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect and that transgender kids, like their friends, deserve the same chances to learn sportsmanship, self-discipline, and teamwork, and to build a sense of belonging with their peers.” More from NPR, Los Angeles Blade and HRC.

🏫 HRC FOUNDATION’S WELCOMING SCHOOLS AWARDS TWO BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS WITH SEAL OF EXCELLENCE: “In the midst of outrageous legislative attacks on families and students across the nation by lawmakers who wish to silence and erase the LGBTQ+ community in our schools, we’re inspired by educators who are going the extra mile to create truly welcoming schools,” said HRC Welcoming Schools Director Cheryl Greene (she/her, @cgreene2027). “Creating LGBTQ+ and gender-inclusive schools means embracing and welcoming all students and families as their authentic selves – it is simply the right thing to do.” More from HRC.[MY1] [MO2]
