HRC responds to three possible violent deaths of trans and non-binary people -- at least 2 were Black trans women.

HRC MOURNS MERCI MACK, BLACK TRANS WOMAN KILLED IN DALLAS: “Another Black transgender woman has had her life stolen from her,” said Tori Cooper, HRC director of community engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative (@MsToriCooper1). “We cannot become numb to the fact that our community has learned of more killings of transgender and gender non-conforming people in the past few weeks than HRC has ever tracked in the past seven years. Her friends say that Merci Mack was a young, upbeat soul who deserved to experience a full life. HRC is mourning with Merci’s loved ones and are calling for a full, thorough investigation into her death.” More from HRC.

  • Over the weekend, it was reported that three trans and non-binary people were violently killed -- Bree Black, Shaki Peters and Summer Taylor. “This horrific spike in violence against our community must be an urgent call to action for every single person in this nation,” added Cooper. “Over the course of one weekend, we have learned of three possible violent deaths of trans and non-binary people -- at least 2 were Black trans women. This is the deadliest period we have on record. While we are still awaiting facts on the ground, it is clear that members of our beloved community are being killed because of who they are. Racism and transphobia are destroying lives and taking away our loved ones. I am heartbroken. I am furious. When will our country stop killing us?” More from The Advocate

DETROIT MAN SENTENCED IN 2019 KILLING OF BLACK TRANS WOMAN, TWO BLACK GAY MEN: “While it is heartening that the killer of Alunte Davis, Paris Cameron and Timothy Blancher is being rightfully punished for his heinous crimes -- targeting and killing people simply for being LGBTQ -- the larger epidemic of hate violence that targets people of color and LGBTQ people is an urgent crisis,” said HRC Press Secretary Elliott Kozuch (@ElliottKozuch). “Last year, when these murders occurred, at least 27 transgender and gender non-conforming people were killed. The vast majority of these people were Black transgender women like Cameron. This year, HRC has tracked at least 19 deaths of trans and gender non-conforming people. Every single one of these victims deserves justice as well.” More from The New York Times.

HRC LAUNCHES NEXT PHASE IN LONG TERM CARE EQUALITY INDEX ASSESSMENT: After completing the self-assessment, long-term care facilities will be provided with resources, best practices, examples and a learning module from HRC and SAGE that will give them a road map to becoming more LGBTQ-inclusive. • The LEI encourages and helps long-term care facilities to adopt policies and best practices when caring for LGBTQ older adults. Experts predict that as many as 4.7 million LGBTQ elders will be seeking care and services by 2030, and a recent AARP survey of LGBTQ older adults found that more than 60% were concerned about how they would be treated in a long-term care setting.

GLOBAL EQUALITY NEWS

HRC DENOUNCES PASSAGE OF RUSSIAN CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT DEFINING MARRIAGE EXCLUSIVELY AS UNION BETWEEN A MAN AND A WOMAN: “Russia is tripling down on its attacks on the basic human rights and dignity of LGBTQ people by adding constitutional prohibitions against marriage equality,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “Putin and his administration used propaganda brochures leading up to the election promising a return to ‘traditional family values,’ using marriage between loving couples as a wedge to push through his nefarious agenda. It is shameful, manipulative and malicious. Any leader who would resort to scapegoating LGBTQ people for political gain is a threat to the human rights of all.” More from NBC and HRC.
