We must say it again -- Black Trans Lives Matter.

97 DAYS

We are experiencing an epidemic of anti-trans violence devastating our community. Since HRC began tracking this data in 2013, advocates have never recorded such a high number of violent deaths at this point in the year. Each of these victims had communities and loved ones, hopes and dreams for the future. Anti-trans bias, racism, sexism and other oppressive systems continue to deprive beloved members of our community of necessities to live and thrive.

  • HRC mourns Brian “Egypt” Powers, Queasha D. Hardy and Dior H Ova/Tiffany Harris and : Powers’, Hardy’s and Ova’s deaths are believed to be at least the 17th, 24th and 25th violent deaths of transgender or gender non-conforming people this year in the U.S. We say at least because too often these stories go unreported -- or misreported.
  • Tragically, we know that this epidemic of violence does not stop at our borders. Dorothy De Lima, a Brazilian trans woman, was shot and killed this weekend.
  • “Words cannot describe the devastation felt by every person affected by this epidemic of violence,” said HRC Director of Community Engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative Tori Cooper (@MsToriCooper1). “The trans and gender non-conforming community and our loved ones are all screaming for justice.”
  • In an op-ed for the ACLU of Alabama, HRC’s Carmarion D. Anderson (@cander01) writes, “There has never been a more important time to ensure that we are lifting up the voices and experiences of Black and Brown transgender women, including here in Alabama. The world must understand and recognize our humanity, and we must end this violence.”

HRC RESPONDS TO TRUMP ADMIN ROLLING BACK PROTECTIONS FOR IMMIGRANTS, UNDERMINING SUPREME COURT RULING AFFIRMING DACA: “Once again, the Trump-Pence administration is putting the safety and livelihoods of 300,000 undocumented immigrants and young people at risk to score political points,” said HRC President Alphonso David (@AlphonsoDavid). “We need a President who will protect the nearly two million Dreamers and a Congress that will pass the permanent solution they deserve. It’s time to hold Trump, Pence, McConnell and the Senate majority accountable at the ballot box.” More from HRC

HRC RESPONDS TO THE ARREST OF A TRANS WOMAN IN NEW YORK CITY BY UNIDENTIFIED NYPD OFFICERS: “[Tuesday] night, plainclothes NYPD officers yanked a young transgender woman, Nikki, off the street in broad daylight. This incident, along with many others of unidentified officers arresting people and taking them away in unmarked vehicles, is part of a frightening pattern being perpetrated across this country,” said HRC President Alphonso David. ICYMI -- PENCE, DEVOS VISITED HORRIBLY ANTI-LGBTQ SCHOOL IN NORTH CAROLINA: “It tells you a lot about the warped values of Mike Pence and Betsy DeVos that they choose to highlight a school like Thales Academy that refuses to even allow students to talk about their sexual orientation, let alone seek refuge in friends as they struggle to embrace their identities,” said HRC Associate Regional Campaign Director Melodía Gutiérrez (@mell0wdia).
