THE 117TH CONGRESS WILL PRIORITIZE LGBTQ EQUALITY: On Sunday, January 3, the 117th U.S. Congress swore in its new members, which boasts a pro-equality majority in the U.S. House of Representatives and record number of women and LGBTQ people elected. “The 117th Congress has the opportunity to not only put our democracy back on track but deliver real positive change for LGBTQ people’s daily lives -- including prioritizing passage of the Equality Act, crucial federal legislation that would finally guarantee explicit protections for LGBTQ people under our nation’s existing civil rights laws,” said HRC President Alphonso David (@AlphonsoDavid). HRC EXIT POLL -- LGBTQ, EQUALITY VOTERS STRONGLY SUPPORTED JOE BIDEN FOR PRESIDENT: “Over the last three elections, the share of LGBTQ voters and Equality Voters has continued to increase, solidifying our community and our allies as a key rising constituency that can make or break a politician’s success,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “Our issues matter, our votes matter and politicians around the country have taken notice. This development did not occur in a single cycle, but rather through sustained efforts by the Human Rights Campaign to identify and improve turnout amongst these groups. Now with pro-equality control restored in the White House, the future of our community and our movement is bright.” Read more from HRC and The 19th.
