Trump admin attacks against LGBTQ people with final HHS regulation; Education Dept publishes memo misconstruing Bostock decision

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION LAUNCHES 11TH HOUR ATTACK AGAINST LGBTQ PEOPLE, WOMEN, RELIGIOUS MINORITIES WITH HHS REGULATION: On Friday, HRC responded to news that at the 11th hour, the lame duck Trump-Pence White House finalized a regulation that would permit discrimination against LGBTQ people, religious minorities and women in programs related to foster care, adoption, HIV and STI prevention, youth homelessness, refugee resettlement, elder care programs and more. “At the 11th hour, the lame duck Trump-Pence administration has published its parting assault on the LGBTQ community via a federal regulation that would permit discrimination across the entire spectrum of HHS programs receiving federal funding,” said HRC President Alphonso David (@AlphonsoDavid). “The Biden-Harris administration and Secretary Designate Xavier Becerra must urgently work to rescind this discriminatory regulation.” More from HRC.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION PUBLISHES MEMORANDUM MISCONSTRUING SUPREME COURT’S BOSTOCK DECISION: Said HRC President Alphonso David: “In her final moments at the Department of Education, Secretary Betsy DeVos prioritized punishing LGBTQ students. The memorandum refusing to apply Bostock to federal education law is unconscionable and legally flawed.” More from HRC.

HRC MOURNS ALEXANDRIA WINCHESTER, TRANSGENDER LATINA KILLED IN NEW YORK IN DECEMBER: HRC has now tracked at least 44 deaths in 2020 of transgender and gender non-conforming people. “Alexandria mattered to her community and to the world. The loss of another transgender person in 2020 is devastating,” said HRC Associate Director of the Transgender Justice Initiative Lindsey Clark. “Last year was the deadliest year for fatal violence against transgender and gender non-conforming people that we have ever tracked.
