EQUALITY ACT PASSES U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES: In a bipartisan vote, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass the Equality Act. “Today’s vote is a major milestone for equality bringing us closer to ensuring that every person is treated equally under the law,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “The Human Rights Campaign thanks the U.S. House of Representatives for its commitment to LGBTQ equality and advancing this legislation forward on behalf of all Americans. HRC MOURNS JEFFREY “JJ” BRIGHT, TRANS TEEN KILLED IN PENNSYLVANIA: Bright was a student at Ambridge High School in Ambridge, Pa. and was active in P.R.I.S.M. (Pride. Respect. Inspiration. Safety. Mentoring.), a local non-profit outreach organization for the LGBTQ+ youth of Beaver County, Pa. “Jeffrey was just so young, too young to have his life cut short,” said Tori Cooper, HRC Director of Community Engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative. “JJ had friends, family, a community and a life that he deserved to live. Our hearts go out to everyone in JJ’s community. As this high rate of violence against transgender people continues, we need everyone to keep mobilizing, keep speaking up and keep supporting trans lives.” More from HRC.
