#AM_Equality: HRC honors Human Rights Day with grants to global LGBTQ advocates; We mourn Kimberly Fial, white transgender woman killed in California

HRC HONORS HUMAN RIGHTS DAY WITH GRANTS TO GLOBAL LGBTQ ADVOCATES: HRC launched the Global Small Grants Program, which is supporting 20 initiatives to advance the human rights of LGBTQ people in 17 countries. Said HRC President Alphonso David (@AlphonsoDavid): “Human Rights Day is a celebration of the incredible progress the LGBTQ community has made to secure equality across the globe, but also is a stark reminder of the work that remains to be done to combat the widespread persecution and oppression that challenges our community.” More from HRC.

HRC JOINS HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISTS, ARTISTS TO PEN AN OPEN LETTER IN NYT CALLING NIGERIA’S GOVERNMENT TO END STATE-SANCTIONED VIOLENCE: The open letter, signed by luminaries including Opal Tometi, Angela Davis, Greta Thunberg and Rev. Dr. Bernice King, expresses outrage at the Nigerian government’s violent response to the #EndSARS anti-police brutality movement. More here.

RUTGERS CMSI AND HRC REPORT HIGHLIGHTS GROUNDBREAKING LGBTQ INCLUSION EFFORTS AT HCBUS: The Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions (CMSI) in collaboration with the HRC Foundation, released “Modeling Inclusion: HBCUs and LGBTQ+ Support,” a research brief examining the ground-breaking steps that Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are taking to establish LGBTQ inclusive policies and practices on their campuses. HRC MOURNS KIMBERLY FIAL, WHITE TRANSGENDER WOMAN KILED IN CALIFORNIA: At the time of Fial’s death, her death was believed to have been at least the 40th reported. HRC has now tracked at least 41 deaths this year of transgender and gender non-conforming people. Said HRC Associate Director of the Transgender Justice Initiative Lindsey Clark: “At least five transgender women were killed in November alone. This violence is unacceptable and it must be stopped. We call on everyone, from grassroots organizers to those at the highest levels, to take action to end this violence and protect the transgender and gender non-conforming community.” More from HRC.

THURSDAY FEATURE -- SARAH MCBRIDE ON THE IMPACT OF HAVING ‘A SEAT AT THE TABLE’: Once sworn in, Sarah McBride (@SarahEMcBride) will be the first transgender state senator in Delaware. “I know how much of a difference it would have made for me as a young person to have seen this news, and my hope is that whether you’re LGBTQ or not, you see this result and you recognize that you can live your truth, whatever that is, and dream big dreams all at the same time,” said McBride. SUPREME COURT PRESERVES OREGON PUBLIC SCHOOL’S TRANS-INCLUSIVE POLICY: The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a case originating in Oregon challenging a school district’s policy that allowed transgender students to use restrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their gender identity. ANOTHER IMPORTANT STEP FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY IN NORTHERN IRELAND: Starting December 7th, same-sex couples can convert a civil union into a marriage. Same-sex couples were permitted to begin marrying earlier this year. More from IrishCentral.
