#AM_Equality: Quinn makes history as the first openly transgender Olympic athlete to win gold; HRC mourns Tierramarie Lewis

🥇 QUINN IS THE FIRST OUT TRANS OLYMPIC ATHLETE TO WIN A GOLD MEDAL: With Team Canada women’s soccer team taking gold in Tokyo, 25-year-old Quinn (@TheQuinny5, they/them) became the first openly transgender Olympian to win a gold medal. Quinn won their gold medal when Canada beat Sweden 3-2 on penalty kicks. More from Out, ESPN, CNN and NBC News.

HRC MOURNS TIERRAMARIE LEWIS, BLACK TRANSGENDER WOMAN KILLED IN CLEVELAND: HRC is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Tierramarie Lewis, a 36-year-old Black transgender woman who was killed in Cleveland, Ohio on June 12. “Another Black transgender woman has been killed in this country. When will this violence end? Tierramarie should have had the chance to live the life she wanted to live,” said HRC Director of Community Engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative Tori Cooper (@MsToriCooper1, she/her). “As we continue to see so much violence against trans and gender non-conforming people, everyone must speak up and take action to end the stigma and fatal violence that often targets our community.” More from HRC.

GAY HISTORIAN ON COMPILING LIST OF LGBTQ OLYMPIC ATHLETES: For over 10 years now, Tony Scupham-Bilton has been compiling a list of openly LGBTQ Olympic athletes. “The original list has grown steadily over the years, and every time I reach a milestone number I am amazed,” Scupham-Bilton said. “By the time I reached 400 last autumn I had a feeling that was more of disbelief than anything.
