LGBTQ AMERICANS TAKING BIGGER ECONOMIC HIT AMID PANDEMIC, CENSUS DATA FINDS: In a statement, HRC Senior Vice President for Programs, Research and Training Jay Brown (@ThisIsJayBrown), said the Census Bureau’s findings “highlight what we have long known -- LGBTQ+ Americans disproportionately bear the brunt of economic hardships, from food insecurity to unemployment.” More from NBC News.

JAMES C. HORMEL, FIRST OPENLY GAY U.S. AMBASSADOR AND A FOUNDER OF HRC, DIES AT 88: “Jim Hormel was a giant in the movement for LGBTQ+ equality. His commitment in helping to found the Human Rights Campaign and his dedication to ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic ensure that the contributions he made will ripple out for years and decades to come,” HRC President Alphonso David (@AlphonsoDavid, he/him). “He was a tremendously valued member of the Human Rights Campaign community and his memory will live on at this organization and others that have made up his life’s work. THERE ARE 564 KNOWN OPENLY LGBTQ+ ATHLETES WHO HAVE COMPETED IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES: There have been at least 564 LGBTQ+ athletes to compete in the Olympic Games, according to a new analysis by gay Olympic historian Tony Scupham-Bilton. ‘AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL’ ALUM MARVIN CORTES COMES OUT AS BISEXUAL: Earlier this month, Marvin Cortes (@marvincortes1) took to social media to come out as bisexual. “I want to let you know that I’m coming out as openly bisexual. I’ve been in love with both men and women,” Cortes said in a heartfelt, 11-minute coming-out video he posted to Instagram TV in early August. “I've been proud to be a part of the gay community in my personal life, and I just want to share it now publicly online.” More from Out.

U.N. TAKES A STAND AS GHANA PREPARES LAW CRIMINALIZING LGBTQ+ ADVOCACY: Last Thursday, independent experts affiliated with the U.N.’s Human Rights Council referred to Ghana’s draft legislation as “a system of state-sponsored discrimination and violence” in a letter to the country’s U.N. mission. If signed into law by President Nana Akufo-Addo, the bill would strengthen the existing penalties for same-sex activity and punish LGBTQ+ advocacy with up to 10 years in prison. More from them.

IT COULD SOON BE A LOT EASIER TO CORRECT YOUR LEGAL GENDER IN NEW ZEALAND: New Zealand’s parliament is one step closer to passing a bill that would make it easier for trans people to change the gender listed on their birth certificates. The legislation contains language allowing for New Zealanders to self-identify their gender without outside approval. More from them and Reuters.
