#AM_Equality: HRC condemns passage of horrific anti-LGBTQ+ bills in Georgia and Oklahoma; HRC endorses Mark Kelly for Senate

GEORGIA GOV. BRIAN KEMP SIGNS UNNECESSARY, HARMFUL LEGISLATION ALLOWING DISCRIMINATION AGAINST TRANSGENDER KIDS PLAYING SCHOOL SPORTS: “The governor and legislative leaders are continually creating these false dilemmas that fail to connect with the real issues faced by everyday Georgians. Transgender kids are not creating problems by participating in school sports,” said HRC Georgia State Director Dewayne Johnson (they/he). “Singling them out for discriminatory treatment – preventing them from playing with their friends and enjoying the benefits of athletic activity – serves no one except those who want to fearmonger and further divide Georgians.” More from CNN and HRC.

HRC CONDEMNS OKLAHOMA STATE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES FOR PASSING ANTI-EQUALITY LEGISLATION: “Anti-equality legislators in the Oklahoma State House have been relentless in their attacks on LGBTQ+ people, and with bill after bill they prove only that their true purpose is to discriminate against and harm transgender youth. This bill will prevent teachers from providing safe and inclusive classrooms for LGBTQ+ youth and will increase bullying, not reduce it,” said HRC State Legislative Director and Senior Counsel Cathryn Oakley (@CthrynOkly, she/her). “This bill has no legitimate government purpose – it is justified only by discrimination – and will serve only to do harm against kids who are just trying to be kids”. More from HRC, CNN and Xtra.

FRIDAY FEATURE: Sam Manzella (@_sammanzella, she/her) is a GLAAD Media Award-nominated writer, editor, and digital producer based in Brooklyn. She was previously an Associate Editor at Logo, Paramount Global’s LGBTQ+ digital brand. She’s covered everything from legislative attacks on transgender youth to the astrological transits of the moment.

  • Read her recommendation: We Call It Time Travel. “Autostraddle published this stunning personal essay by Vanessa Pamela in late February, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since! Nobody writes about the life-affirming experience of queer love—platonic and romantic—quite like her.”
  • Learn more about what inspires her: “I’m incredibly inspired by queer author and essayist Carmen Maria Machado. Her lyrical 2019 memoir, ‘In the Dreamhouse,’ is both enchantingly beautiful and devastatingly raw. It made me feel seen in a way few works ever have and has revolutionized the way I approach writing narrative nonfiction and personal essays.”
