HRC TO ANNOUNCE RECORD SUPPORT BY U.S. BUSINESSES FOR THE EQUALITY ACT: The business community’s support reflects the broad and overwhelming support nationwide for the Equality Act — historic federal legislation that would modernize and improve our nation’s civil rights laws by including explicit, permanent protections for LGBTQ people and women, and expanding protections for women, people of color, and people of all faiths. HRC PRESIDENT CALLS ON NCAA TO FOLLOW UP COMMITMENT WITH ACTION: “In Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and South Dakota there are now overtly discriminatory laws or, in the case of South Dakota, executive orders, banning transgender athletes from participating in sports,” said HRC President Alphonso David (@AlphonsoDavid). “Similar bills are currently awaiting signature or veto by governors in Montana and West Virginia, and could soon be enacted into law. ⚖️ JUDGE TOSSES SUIT THAT SOUGHT TO BLOCK TRANSGENDER ATHLETES: U.S. District Court Judge Robert Chatigny dismissed a lawsuit filed a year ago by cisgender runners who objected to the participation of two transgender sprinters. The lawsuit was dismissed on procedural grounds, saying in the ruling released Sunday that there was no dispute to resolve because the two transgender athletes have graduated and the plaintiffs could not identify other female transgender athletes. HRC MOURNS TIARA BANKS, BLACK TRANSGENDER WOMAN KILLED IN CHICAGO: HRC is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Tiara Banks, a 24-year-old Black transgender woman, who was killed in Chicago, Illinois, on April 21, 2021. Tiara’s death is at least the 16th violent death of a transgender or gender non-conforming person in 2021. More from HRC.

🏘️ NEW D.C. PROGRAM WANTS TO HOUSE HOMELESS LGBTQ SENIORS: A new initiative called HOPE is a partnership between the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs and the D.C. Housing Authority in conjunction with the local advocacy organization Mary’s House for Older Adults. This program will offer vouchers to low-income individuals to help offset their household expenses with 15 total vouchers being offered. More from them and Washington Blade.
