#AM_Equality: Meet Rebekah; Tonight -- join us for a discussion about race and sexuality in theater

TONIGHT -- JOIN US FOR A DISCUSSION OF RACE & SEXUALITY IN THEATER: This conversation presented by HRC and Slave Play will explore the power of Black queer artists, the importance of representation and accessibility for the arts and the intersectionality of art and advocacy. MEET REBEKAH: Highlighting the volume of bills in legislatures across the country that would prohibit trans children from playing sports at public schools, HRC released a video yesterday featuring Rebekah, a 14-year-old field hockey player and trans girl from New Jersey and her mother Jamie. In the video, Rebekah talks about what she loves about playing field hockey with her friends, and why attacks on kids’ abilities to play sports in school are unfair and hurtful. Rebekah says, “Sports are something that I really like doing. I’m so much more than trans. That doesn’t make me less of a girl, doesn’t make me less of a human, either. HRC MOURNS JAIDA PETERSON, BLACK TRANSGENDER WOMAN KILLED IN NORTH CAROLINA: “In the last week, we’ve learned of the deaths of two Black transgender women, including Jaida,” said Tori Cooper (@MsToriCooper1), HRC Director of Community Engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative. “This violence is alarming and unacceptable. Her life should never have been cut short. We need everyone to speak up, affirm that Black Trans Lives Matter and take action now in order to end this violence. Jaida had family, friends and a community who cared about her and loved her, and our hearts go out to them.” More from HRC.

ALARM GROWS OVER IMPACT OF ANTI-TRANS LEGISLATION IN STATES: Medical professionals and LGBTQ advocacy groups alike are sounding the alarm over anti-trans legislation in at least 19 states that have proposed or passed bills seeking to ban gender affirming care. This comes as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychiatric Association, the Endocrine Society and several other large medical groups have publicly opposed anti-trans bills. TEXAS BILL WOULD BRAND PARENTS OF TRANS CHILDREN AS “CHILD ABUSERS” IF THEY SUPPORT THEIR KIDS: Despite evidence that supporting trans youth is better for the health of a child, Texas lawmakers are proposing Texas Senate Bill 1646, which would redefine child abuse to include the support of gender affirming care. This bill has already been challenged by a group called Doctors for Change in an open letter to the sponsors of this legislation. More from LGBTQ Nation.
