HRC Story

The Human Rights Campaign represents a force of more than 1.5 million members and supporters nationwide. As the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization, HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are ensured of their basic equal rights, and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.

Candace Gingrich

Associate Director, Youth and Campus Engagement Program

Since 1995, Candace Gingrich has served as a key advocate for issues of importance to the LGBTQ community. Their involvement in the movement for queer equality began when their brother, Rep. Newt Gingrich, R-GA., was elected House speaker.

Their 1996 autobiography, The Accidental Activist, was a best seller in the LGBTQ community. Gingrich has been profiled in national newspapers & magazines, guest-blogged at Huffington Post and appeared on Good Morning America, Countdown with Keith Olbermann and The Rachel Maddow Show. They also memorably guest-starred as the minister on Friends in the groundbreaking episode "The One with the Lesbian Wedding."

On behalf of the Human Rights Campaign, Gingrich has crisscrossed the country to promote the importance of coming out, the duty to vote and the power of everyday conversations to change minds. As HRC's Youth & Campus Engagement associate director, Gingrich works to provide tools, facilitate connections and empower Gen EQ (Generation Equality) to fight for LGBTQ equality on campus and beyond. Gingrich also serves as the HRC University Internship Program coordinator, a program that educates, trains and provides mentorship to nearly 100 students yearly.

Gingrich lives in Hyattsville, Md. and Chicago, Ill. with their partner, Ill. Rep. Kelly Cassidy, her three sons and three cats.
