days until the election. Unite for equality. Like never before.
The Human Rights Campaign invites you to join us for a workshop on "Sexuality, Gender, and Family in the Muslim Community" led by Imam Daayiee Abdullah, Founder and Executive Director of MECCA Institute, a progressive Islamic institute with a research center and an online chaplaincy program.
This workshop tackles misconceptions that flow through the traditionalism within Western Muslim communities that denigrate lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) Muslims. Focusing on parents, educators, health professionals, and student leaders, the workshop will cover topics that showed up throughout the last fifteen centuries. These topics include Gender, Islamic context of “legal” sexual relationships, Islam and family (clan and tribalism, inheritance), parents, parental rights and responsibilities, as well as LGBTQ Muslims in contemporary times.
Imam Daayiee Abdullah, is an international lecturer on progressive Muslim concepts, intra-faith and interfaith networking, and inclusive and progressive revisions of Islamic thought. Abdullah actively works to provide a greater understanding of race, gender, and sexual equality within and beyond Muslim communities.
