On Sunday, HRC will celebrate the 27th annual National Coming Out Day (NCOD). A globally recognized event, NCOD encourages LGBT people to live open and honest lives, and their non-LGBT allies to support LGBT visibility.

Whether it’s coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or as an ally, countless American actors, athletes, musicians and YouTube sensations advanced the movement for equality in 2015. In honor of National Coming Out Day, HRC is celebrating a few of this year’s standout coming out moments in pop culture.

“The history of the LGBT movement shows the true power our stories have to change hearts and minds,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “In the decades since Harvey Milk first urged every LGBT person to come out to our family, friends, neighbors and coworkers, we’ve caused the opposition to equality to fall away. As more and more people continue to speak their truth, we’re inching closer to a day where no LGBT person ever feels compelled to hide who they are out of fear. National Coming Out Day is helping us reach that moment.”

All weekend long, we’re asking our more than 1.5 million members and supporters to join the movement by sharing your story alongside the hashtag #comingout.
