Post submitted by Ashley Fowler, former HRC Global Coordinator

Today is a historic day for Ireland, as same-sex couples can finally wed. In May, the country became the first nation to pass marriage equality through a national referendum. The bill was then signed into law earlier this month by Irish President Michael Higgins.

HRC was proud to partner with the Irish coalition YES Equality, a campaign comprised of GLEN, Marriage Equality, and the Irish Council for Civil Liberties. The campaign played an integral role in ensuring the "yes" vote on the Marriage Equality referendum. Staff from HRC met with Irish advocates to share best practices and offer support for the campaign. Additionally, we released a new t-shirt and all net proceeds were donated to the campaign for public education on equality.

Director of HRC Global, Ty Cobb, was on the ground in Ireland with YouTube star Raymond Braun when the referendum passed.

Couples were permitted to apply for marriage licenses beginning at 2:15 p.m. local time and previous same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions are now fully recognized.

Irish couples wishing to marry can refer to this infographic released by GLEN for help navigating the legal sphere.
