The longest-serving Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives allegedly told a group of high school students, “You can’t have marriage with two men. What do you get with two bulls?”
On Tuesday of this week, U.S. Rep Don Young of Alaska visited Wasilla High School to speak to students at an assembly. According to reports, Rep. Young “acted in a disrespectful and sometimes offensive manner to some students, used profanity and started talking about bull sex when confronted with a question about same-sex marriage.”
The school principal recalls that, when asked why he opposes marriage equality, Rep. Young responded with, “You can’t have marriage with two men. What do you get with two bulls?”
Perhaps most shocking was the manner in which Rep. Young addressed suicide. Just days after a student at the school committed suicide, Rep. Young said that suicide shows a "lack of support from friends and family."
According to the school principal, a friend of the deceased student then shouted, "He had friends. He had support." In response to a follow-up comment about depression, Young allegedly responded, “Well, what, do you just go to the doctor and get diagnosed with suicide?”
School personnel also told reporter at Alaska Dispatch News that Rep. Young used either the words "--hole" or "smartass."
Congressman Young apparently stands by his comments – and took things a step farther at an event the next day.
From the Alaska Dispatch News:
Asked about the “lack of support” comment, Young expanded on it and added that suicide in Alaska didn’t exist before “government largesse” gave residents an entitlement mentality, according to an audio recording of his senior center appearance.
He also criticized school administrators for supporting students who disrespected him and said he refused to “coddle” them.
Statements like these are completely unacceptable. While family acceptance and support is vitally important to the well-being of all youth, the manner in which Rep. Young addressed students in mourning is reprehensible. Rep. Young was elected to be Alaska’s voice in Congress, and Alaskans deserve better.
