President Obama made a surprise video appearance at the opening ceremony for the ninth annual Gay Games, held in Ohio, on Saturday.

In the video, he expresses his pride and support in the accomplishments for the LGBT community in the last several years during his administration. “It’s been remarkable to see the games thrive over the years. We’ve also seen America change in that time,” he said.

HRC is on the ground at the Gay Games with hundreds of local volunteers supporting the event. During the opening march, blue and gold equality flags could be seen everywhere. HRC will continue meeting with attendees at the Gay Games to talk about our work both domestically and abroad. Later this week, HRC and the Athletes for Equality program are the presenting sponsors of the marathon and half-marathon. HRC is proud to be a platinum sponsor.
