In last night’s GOP debate on Fox News, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee reiterated his stance against the LGBT community, this time focusing on the military's ban on transgender service.

“The military is not a social experiment,” Huckabee proclaimed. “The purpose of the military is kill people and break things. It is not to transform the culture by trying out some ideas that some people think would make us a different country and more diverse."

HRC President Chad Griffin was quick to respond, tweeting, “Mike Huckabee is fundamentally wrong. The time for ending the military’s ban on transgender service is long overdue. #GOPDebate”

Huckabee’s comments come less than a month after U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced the establishment of a working group to study the “policy and readiness implications” of allowing transgender service members to serve openly.

HRC has long called for an end to the military’s ban on transgender service.

There are approximately 15,500 actively serving transgender members of the U.S. military, making the Department of Defense (DOD) the largest employer of transgender people in America. These courageous service members were forced to serve in silence by DOD medical regulations prohibiting their service.

This isn’t the first time Mike Huckabee spoke offensively about members of the LGBT community in the military. Huckabee supports reinstating “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and believes troops do, too.

Huckabee has been a staunch opponent of LGBT equality, maintaining opposition to LGBT equality on every issue that has come before him. Get the facts about Huckabee and other Republican candidates at
