Today, HRC announced its endorsement of Jaime Harrison in his bid for the U.S. Senate.
Jaime Harrison has been a steadfast ally for the LGBTQ community throughout his time in public service and his tenure as Associate Chair of the Democratic National Committee. Harrison has committed to co-sponsoring and voting for the Equality Act if elected, crucial federal legislation that would finally guarantee explicit protections for LGBTQ people under our nation's existing civil rights laws. As Director of Floor Operations and Counsel of the U.S. House, Harrison guided the landmark Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act to its successful passage.
“Jaime Harrison has been among the strongest advocates for LGBTQ equality and we’re proud to stand by his side as he runs for Senate,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “Harrison’s demonstrated record of support for LGBTQ people and families stands in stark contrast with his opponent, who has refused to support non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people despite over 58% of South Carolinians supporting those protections. The Human Rights Campaign is committed to mobilizing the nearly 289,000 Equality Voters across South Carolina to send Jaime Harrison to the U.S. Senate to continue moving equality forward for all Americans.”
“I am honored to receive Human Rights Campaign’s endorsement and look forward to working together to ensure equality for all, no matter your sexual orientation or gender identity,” Harrison said. “One of the greatest honors of my life was leading the effort to pass the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. As Senator, I will continue the fight to create a world where LGBTQIA+ students, service members and workers can be their true, authentic selves.”
