HRC congratulates Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) on his successful election on Monday to serve as one of three co-chairs for the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee. Cicilline is the first openly LGBTQ Representative to be elected to a House leadership position.
Since joining Congress in 2011, Cicilline has been a vocal champion for LGBTQ equality. He has received perfect scores on the two HRC Congressional Scorecards that have been released since he was elected. He currently co-chairs the LGBT Equality Caucus in the House of Representatives.
On July 23, 2015, Cicilline introduced the Equality Act, which would provide consistent and explicit non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people across key areas of life, including employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs, and jury service. He is also the lead sponsor of the Global Respect Act, which would provide a means to prevent individuals who violate the human rights of LGBTQ people from entry into the U.S.
