Post submitted by Freedom Massachusetts’ Field Director Katie Guare
Things are heating up in the Bay State with the formal launch of Freedom Massachusetts last week. With pride celebrations taking place across Massachusetts, it provides us the perfect opportunity to connect with as many voters as possible.
From our experiences and interactions, it is clear that Massachusetts voters strongly support a much-needed gender identity bill. With help from our great team of volunteers at Boston and Salem pride celebrations, over 1,000 voters signed postcards asking the governor and the legislature to gender identity legislation.
There is currently no state law in Massachusetts explicitly prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender identity and expression in public accommodations. Transgender individuals are frequently harassed in public because of their gender identity. Seventeen states have now surpassed Massachusetts to pass these vital non-discrimination protections. .
Freedom Massachusetts is a joint effort of state and national organizations, including the Human Rights Campaign, Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition, MassEquality, the American Civil Liberties Union, Freedom for All Americans, Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, the Massachusetts Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus, BAGLY, the Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth, the Anti-Defamation League and PFLAG.
HRC's Katie Guare is leading the field effort for Freedom Massachusetts, serving as the campaign's field director. She is working with HRC members and coalition partners so constituents can voice their support for the bill through in-district meetings with key legislators, phone banks and grassroots actions across the state.
