Today, Xavier Bettel, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister, became the first EU leader to wed a same-sex partner.

According to The Huffington Post, Bettel and his husband, Gauthier Destenay, were among the first couples to marry under a recent marriage equality law that went into effect earlier this year.

"I could have hidden it or repressed it and been unhappy my whole life," Bettel told a Belgian broadcaster, according to Reuters."But I told myself that if you want to be a politician and be honest in politics, you have to be honest with yourself and accept that you are who you are."

In June of last year, Luxembourg’s national parliament, the Chamber of Deputies, approved a marriage equality bill by a vote of 56 to 4.  In addition to granting full marriage rights to Luxembourg’s LGBT citizens--previously only civil unions were available--the legislation also granted LGBT couples full adoption rights as well.
