Minnesota Senate Judiciary Committee Passes Marriage Equality
March 12, 2013 by Trevor Chandler, Senior Regional Field Organizer
Moments ago marriage equality passed through the Senate Judiciary Committee on a 5-3 vote, making history as the first time such legislation has ever passed a legislative committee in Minnesota. It was an incredible scene with overflow crowds filling viewing areas around the state Capitol in St. Paul. Ushered through by bill sponsor Senator Scott Dibble we now look to the House Civil Law Committee to pass the legislation later tonight, setting the stage for both bills to be moved to a floor vote later in the session.
HRC’s own Sarah Warbelow gave testimony in favor of the bill, speaking about the dangers an unintended consequences of any potential compromise with civil unions. HRC has been hard at work as a major partner with Minnesotans United for All Families, helping activate tens of thousands of volunteers and supporters across the state to tell their legislators to do the right thing. On to the House!
