Marriage Organizing Continues in Illinois
August 9, 2013 by Lynne Bowman, Regional Field Director
I'm on the ground in Illinois this week, and yesterday I had the opportunity to meet with most of the field organizers for the Illinois Unites for Marriage campaign. After a disappointing stall on the marriage bill at the end of May, the Illinois Unites for Marriage campaign has refocused and is back and ready to push towards victory. There’s a lot of work to be done with only 91 days remaining until the end of state legislature’s veto session, during which we could see a vote on the marriage equality bill. And these organizers are ready for it!
The newly refreshed team of more than twenty organizers come from cities all across Illinois and will be working in priority districts from the Wisconsin state line to Springfield and Peoria, down to East St. Louis. Securing the 60 votes needed before early November is no easy lift and this team realizes they have their work cut out for them. However, they are all experienced, energized and excited to take on the challenge. As they develop volunteer teams and start activating supporters of equality in priority districts, I'm confident we'll see the conversation shift on marriage in Illinois.
HRC is pleased to be able to provide over half of the organizers as part of our contribution to the campaign in Illinois. As a member of the Illinois Unites for Marriage steering committee, with partners like the ACLU, Lambda Legal, Freedom to Marry, Chicago Urban League, SEIU and Equality Illinois, HRC will continue to be active in securing marriage equality for all couples in Illinois.
