Moments ago, the Illinois House of Representatives voted 61 to 54 to pass the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act.
This was the most critical step needed before the governor can sign it into law. Soon, the Land of Lincoln will be the fifteenth state, plus the District of Columbia, where all loving and committed couples can marry.
A majority of representatives stood on the right side of history and voted for the marriage equality bill. Send a message of thanks to Rep. Greg Harris and Speaker Madigan for their work ushering in marriage equality to Illinois.
HRC was part of the successful Illinois Unites for Marriage campaign, which helped generate more than 34,000 phone calls to state lawmakers, more than 81,000 emails, and nearly 30,000 postcards. To find out more about HRC’s work in Illinois, visit http://www.hrc.org/resources/entry/hrc-in-illinois.
We couldn’t be happier for all of the people in Illinois who have waited years for this to happen. Now, their families know that Illinois values their love and commitment.
